This handmade leather bookmark is embroidered by Khanyar Leather Co-operative, Kashmir, in the style of traditional embroidery first introduced in the vale of Kashmir by Persian craftsman in the 15th Century. Both men and women still practise the crafts of Kashmir Embroidery.
Kashmir is the northwestern region of the
Indian subcontinent. Until the mid-19th century, the term
Kashmir geographically denoted only the
valley between the
Great Himalayas and the
Pir Panjal mountain range.
